Sabatier Slag Heap

site sabatier©Samuel Dhote

Located by the edge of the forest, the two slag heaps of the old Sabatier pit provide unique environments and provide a clear space in an area dominated by dense woody vegetation. It thus offers a suitable base for certain pioneer species usually absent from forests. Small ponds, located at the foot of the slag heaps, are home to amphibians and odonates.

Slag heaps as refuges for fauna

Resulting from activities at the Sabatier pit, the slag heap was built up from 1913 onwards. A conical slag heap, it has retained its original characteristics. From its summit, the beech and oak forest of Raismes stretches out as far as the eye can see. It is home to woody vegetation (birch, poplar) as well as rich and varied fauna and flora, including the Old World swallowtail butterfly and the blue-winged grasshopper.
