Cernay Integral Biological Reserve

Forêt de saint amand les eaux

This newly-created Integral Biological Reserve aims to let the 100-year-old oaks age without human intervention, so that the process of decay, death and natural renewal over the coming century can be observed.

The ageing process of trees, normally cut short by felling, is left to happen naturally, eventually increasing the number of dead trees, trees that are dry and still standing and trees with hollows in them. The Integral Biological Reserve offers new ecological havens for saproxylic insects and forest creatures that love cavities and crevices (woodpeckers, nuthatches, bats).

Due to the Integral Biological Reserve status of the site and the risks associated with ageing trees, public access does not extend beyond the Notre Dame path.
